 I recently got some FD Polar blades and returned to my attempts at a Chess set. The wood is one and a half inch thick soft maple. It seems to take me over an hour just to cut one piece. CoOuld it be that my saw just cant cut a piece of wood that thick? If so, what should I upgrade to?

Joe - you didn't tell us what size the blades were that you are trying to use - you need at least a #7 (in my humble opinion) to get through it.

I am using a number 7 polar blade. I guess my real question is should I be working on a piece for over an hour and still not even be done with it> I am starting to get the impression that my little saw just cant handle that thickness of wood.

No problem with blade choice but will tell you any maple is a slow cutting wood. You have to be careful when cutting that thick of wood. You need extra tension on the blade to keep it tracking straight. You need to py attention as to not put so much sideward pressure to cause the blade to bow and last use as high speed as you can comfortable control. Good luck.
