I have been constructing wooden storm windows for my 75 year old house. I have made about 5 of them from southern yellow pine. That wood is what the originals were made from. The wood is somewhat 'twisty" at times, and suggestion was made to switch to Poplar. I purchased some poplar and it is very straight and no Knots! However, someone just burst my bubble by saying that poplar didn't hold up well for outside use.
any opinions?
Thanks in advance

I don't have any personal experience w/poplar outdoors but did find a number of places selling poplar outdoor furniture with care tips for it.
Here's one of them...

There are many old barns and log cabins in southern Indiana made from poplar. I recently sold a log cabin that all the logs, rafters, door and window frames were poplar. The cabin was built in 1813.
I have read that poplar has a tendency to twist & warp, but I have never had that problem. A good place to check on species & current prices is www.woodweb.com. This is a very good web site for the amature & professional woodworker. It offers a Q&A section hosted be Dr. Gene Wengert of the U. of Wisc. It also has a market place for buying & selling tools, lumber etc.

Thank you for your help and the referral Ron. I really appreciate it. I like working with poplar and hope to be able to continue my window construction with that material.

Neil
