If you live in Western Canada and have to supply lumber for a project you wiil find the cost for hard woods alarming.
Therefore any pieces that ar (trash wood0 become valuable for small projects like kid's toys etc.TRhanx Roy

Right you are. Even here in Missouri, the cost is truly alarming for hardwoods. I have invested in a decent planer to recover this -trash- wood. Good Luck

I got into woodturning back in 1995 and found there is no such thing.....to woodturners anyway.....as trash wood. I can't believe how much freewood is out there for the taking. But my shop is suffering because I don't have any scraps. I end up saving even small pieces of wood because I can turn it into a chainpull or bottle stopper or some other small item. It's fun to make a beautiful keepsake out of a chunk of wood that was destined for the fire or was left to rot on the forest floor.
Also, if you have a bandsaw that will resaw wood up to about 12", you can make your own short boards from trees people cut down. Just slice 'em up, sticker them and let them air dry. Then plane them down as you need them. They are good for small projects like boxes and can have some remarkable grain.
I think it's fun to salvage and use wood others are throwing away! :)

Don't forget about shipping pallets. just be careful for nails and they probably will need a lot of sanding or planing.
Pallets can be an excellent source. I get some from a couple of the local big box centers for nothing and a local gift import store saves some for me. Just be careful as some of those pallets are coated with wood preservatives that can be pretty toxic.

at least in some areas in New York state there ae band saw mills . many of these saw local hard woods. they often sell the slab or give it away for firewood. I have found many usable pieces in these , but a moisture meter is a good investment if you are going to try this.
