Howdy; Fire has completely destroyed most of my wood craft tools, parts, and machinery, including my nearly new Ridgid TS2424 contractors table saw. Looking (again) for another new 10 inch, 1 1/2hp (min), 120V, contractors table saw with cast iron top and wings, mobil base, and hopefully USA made. Any suggestions or experiences for the best buy under $800? Thanx for any info. Woodchux

First let me say, sorry for the disaster. That is some terrible news. Would you like to elaborate a little as to the incident. I hope there was no one injured to begin with. Maybe there is a lesson we all can learn from this so hopefully you will share with us. I will get into the saw a little later which seems trivial now.

Howdy; Many, many "Thanks" to all of you for your concerns regarding my woodshop fire. Briefly this is the sequence of events. Mid February '06, Saturday afternoon, smelled plastic smoke which was coming from attached garage/woodshop. Feeling door to garage, which was "cold", opened it about six inches. Entire double garage was filled with black oily smoke. Only flame seen was at unplugged table saw area. Thankfully the automatic home fire security system alerted local Fire dept which arrived about three minutes later, but seemed like three hours! After the fire was put out, double garage door cut away, and living room picture window smashed out, it was found that smoke, fire, and water had completely destroyed contents of garage/woodshop including 2 vehicles. In the attached split level house, all the walls were covered with oily smoke! Four fire investigators could NOT find the cause! No one was injured due to this fire. It has taken six months to rebuild (now 80% complete) to be able to move back into a "living condition". Almost everything can be replaced, but it's a tough board to cut! Thanks for listening. woodchux

I too want to thank you for sharing and all I can do is wish you all the best to getting things back together. Like you say those things are just material things. Glad no one was hurt. That was some healthy loss though. I hope you had good insurance. Gets a little trick with a workshop though. Insurance companies do not like home shops. You say the fireman can not come up with an answer but do you have any clues???

I will post my answer to your original question about which tablesaw to buy here. This is just my opinion. First of all if you had good luck with the Rigid and you liked it why not go back to it?? My choice would be a Delta Hybrid which is a combination contractors saw and a cabinet saw. Delta's motors are USA made and they now come with a choice of fences, the unifence or a bismyere. I had to buy a good fence for my Delta contractor saw and bought a Vega fence which is close to the bismyere fence. Best move I ever made with that saw. You can get a 2HP motor on them also. Anyway look on the bright side you get to shop for your toys all over again and this time make the necesary adjustments. Good luck to you.

First I would like to say thank goodness no one was hurt. as fred said material things can be replaced. People can not.

As for the saw... I am kind of partial to the Rigid saw. I do not own one but my father does (which i use when he is not). But now you can look and compare what is out there. One thing you might do is look in the want adds and even go to yard sales. My Dad just picked up a Ryobi table saw (minuse a base) that is almost brand new and a few other tools for about $150. You never know.

Good luck in your search and the rebuilding !

Howdy all, Many "thanks" for all the input suggestions, ideas, and your concern regarding my tablesaw situation. Have been very busy doing "table saw research and testing" and holiday gift building (on a limited basis). Through much evaluation I have found 90% of ALL tablesaw motors are made in the far east. The remaining 10% is mfg in European countries. Sadly none are no longer mfg in USA! Only $ and extra "bells and whistles" separate the good from the best. Made a list of items/needs as to what I prefer in a tablesaw. Don't have 220v capability, & too many $ to convert), so 2/3 of my list was eliminated! Limited space and $ were the final factors, which left only 2 major contendors - Jet and Ridgid. After all this research, the best for my buck will be Ridgid! Maybe an early Christmas "toy" for me!!! :D Thanx again for all the input. woodchux

I use a Craftsman table saw my father bought about 30 years ago. every thing else I own is fairly new ,but nothing can stand up to my ole table saw.I have used all brands, while I was doing construction but none could stand up to the old timer. I GUESS THINGS DO GET BETTER WITH AGE!

Started out using a Craftsman table saw for many years. Learned alot about woodworking and made a number of special fixtures that fit just that saw. For me, somewhere in those past years Craftsman lost the quality they had 30+ years ago! I ran the heck out of that saw, but had a chance to upgrade to a bigger new Ridgid contractors table saw and took it! Almost a year since loosing all my woodworking items in the fire. Got discouraged about doing ANY kind of woodworking and had to find something else to fill my "free time". Nothing seemed to fit my needs as "playing in the wood". Slowly I'm rebuilding the wood shop and trying to get the best "toys" for the buck. Thanx for the info. woodchux
