After I finally was able to get to use my midi lathe and did some practicing, the first recognizable thing that came off the lathe were these birdhouse ornaments. They were alot of fun and sold well at my craft shows. More so at the first one then the last two but none the less I call them a success. Thanks for looking and any comments are welcomed good or bad.

Very nice JT... Now I have to go try it...
What wood did you use? Are they lacquered or painted? The resolution on my screen makes it hard to tell.

Actually it is my photo skills that don't do my pictures justice. I am working on that. Those were taken in a home made photo booth but i think I am getting a professional one.

To answer your questions: I used all types of woods such as yellowheart, redheart, bacote, zebrawood, rosewoods, maple burl, and a host of others. They are all natural colored woods except for the blue, pink and green which I tried dying maple burl to see what they would look like and wouldn't you know it they sold best. They are all top coated with deft gloss lacquer and the reason was it was easy to do and did not have to break out my air gun. The birds can be gotten at any craft store such as AC Moore, or Michaels. I will try new designs for next year. They were alot of fun to make once I got the hang of them.

They really look great... I've never used paint or dye because I would probably make a mess of things... Maybe I'll try now that I have a little more time.
I was curious about the wood because I've been trying to find a wood that is naturally a dark green. I've been interested in making a segmented pen that is modeled on the Vietnam Service Ribbon.http://themeadow.us/vnsm.jpg
I can use Osage Orange for the yellow and bloodwood for the red but I don't know of any true green wood...
