How big is your shop?

Yes, regardless of size it’s never big enough. But what size shop are you working out of right now?

What are you building in that shop?

Do you have plans to build something bigger?

I have a friend that builds custom cabinets in a shop that’s 20’ X 20’ and I read about a guy that has a 4,000 square foot shop that builds music boxes.

I’m working out of a 10 X 12 shop and using the “great outdoors” when the weather permits. While I have built a couple of larger pieces for family most of my work has been scroll saw items, clocks, lamps, desk accessories and kitchen accessories.

I work out of a 3 metre x 3 metre (10' x 10') shed out the back yard, have to drag a power cord out there and plug into a power board whenever I need to use it. Just use my scrollsaw, drill press, router, palm sander and small table saw out of that so its not a bad size for what I do. When I eventually own my own house I plan to have something better and permanent.

Your right!
Its never big enough!....its always to small when your doing a project ...and always way to big when you have to clean the mess up!..lol

Mine is about 12'x30 appoximently and I wish it was double that sometimes! but looking at the other posts I guess I have palace!...lol

Its old.. built in the early 50's I think when my house was built and in need of alot of repair but it serves the purpose for now and its dry....doesnt have all the modern stuff like ...DC system...concrete floors....oooh wait a min ya it does!....I forgot...I open the window and turn on the fan...and just installed some 1 1/8th subflooring that I salvaged ....so I guess I am uptown now!....lol

I dont have a big budget so most of my tools are either salvaged or homemade or aquired by the barter system!...lol...hey they all work great for what I do!

I have a 10" central machinery TS that I got at a goodwill store for $10.00 with 2 hp motor ..craftsman scroll saw (garage sale $25) craftsman 3wheel bandsaw (garage sale $10) 4ft wood lathe..(trade for a floor jack that I had) and my newest edition...5spd drill press ..my landlord gave this to me .,,left in a rental house he had to clean out!...needs new motor and clean up but looks like it will work fine....I also have a homemade 4x36 belt sander.,...and a homemade 3" edger that I made out of a door planer.....you get real creative when your broke!!!!....lol

I dont do alot of fancy projects.....animal cutouts with the scroll saw and some tole painting projects.....I do some tables....mostly like end tables and stands that I make from salvaged 2x4''s and I am learning things on the lathe...like how to fill the shop with chips! mostly....lol

Anyway thats my story so lets see what the other's have to say!

Dan

The photo of your shop could almost be a photo of mine complete with the tree. :D Only real difference is I’ve got a steeper pitch on the roof; I wanted to have attic storage space.

Grybeard

I love your ingenuity! Finding ways to do what you want with what you’ve got is part of the fun in woodworking. Sure, it’d be nice if we could run out and spend several thousand and have a shop like Norm Abram’s got, but for most of us that’s just a dream.

I been "getting by with used and created stuff for so long when I do get to buy something new I almost hate to get sawdust on it!!...but I usually loose that thought in the first hour!!...lol

Soon as the other half gets new batteries in the digicam I might just see about posting some pic's of my inventons!...lol...they may not be "uptown" so to speak but hey they all work for me

Hi Jim - There is a lot of stuff stored up there in mine. Problem is it can only be one layer or I can't see what's up there. Hi

Grybeard - Take those pictures, they are as good as words or better, and these are some good conversations that are going on now.
