I had your post moved because I thought you would get more responses in the correct topic area. My dealings with bowl blanks is very limited because I have yet to do one but I belong to many turner sites and here are some ideas. Everyone looks out for trees being taken down and that could be a free sourse but for exotics you will have to go to the net. Ebay is always a good source because there is alot of people selling them there. Also if you belong to a turners club they like to swap blanks alot. You always have the sources of Crafts Supply, Woodcraft and such. Also you can google bowl blanks. Sorry I am not much of a help but others will chime in and add their 2 cents. So glad to have you aboard.

I agree that finding downed wood from friends is best and most affordable. Woodcraft has some in the 8x8 size in limited wood types. Also try http://www.woodfinder.com/marketplace.php for a possible vendor in your area.

One mail order source that I have dealt with, though I was purchasing Baltic birch ply, they do have other hardwoods both lumber and blanks and turning squares is http://www.woodworkerssource.net
There are many other mail order sites but I havent had dealings with them yet. :)

Two sources I've used have ebay stores "Chitswood" and "Poetic Soul" ...
I've gotten some beautiful Rosewood varieties from Chit: Tzalam, Morado, Bocote, Cocobolo... and he's sent me some very nice Redheart and Purpleheart as well. He has some beautiful burls these days also. His prices are fair but his shipping is a little slow. You definitely get your money's worth though.
Poetic soul has great Gaboon Ebony pen blanks but if you search through the site you can find some nice blocks and chunks as well...
There are also several ebay sellers who deal exclusively in blanks for bowls, vases and candle sticks and although their blanks are beautiful the variety is limited to Red Cedar, Osage Orange, Black Walnut and a few others...
Just log onto ebay and do a search on "bowl blanks"...
