http://www.arizonasilhouette.com/Pen_Kit_Disassembly_Tools.htm It seems there are different sized rods for every pen style. So my question is, is this tool really necessary or are there alternatives??? Or is there a complete kit somewhere?? Have you pen turners run into many cases where it needs to take a pen apart and if so does this damage the parts anyway or can they be reused.

I have a 28 piece punch set that cost less than any ONE of those kits and works on all pens.
I have yet to meet a pen that I cannot dissasemble in a couple minutes.

No damage to the pen whatsoever and all parts can be re-assembled.

Works good if using a friction polish "finish" and the customer returns it because it got dull or wore off . Pull it apart and put a better finish on and put it back together, offer an apology and the customer is on his/her way.

Woodcraft has a basic disassembly kit for about $20 which has worked fine for me. I work with about 10 different pen types and have been able to take apart anything I need with it. Unlike Bill, I have damaged pen parts in the disassembly process and keep a few extras on hand to save the day. I do this less then I used to, but it can happen, especially with the pen refill movement mechanisms which don't recover well from damage.

Try this set from Harbor Freight. Everyone at IAP and elsewhere seems to like them.

Steve.
That is the identical set to what I have. I got mine from their sale flyer about a year to one and a half years ago for the same price at BusyBee tools in Canada , same place as I got my full size lathe.
They are in the same base as the set you showed.
I see now that they have changed to a clear plastic base that doesn't look as strong and they have bumped their price way up.
Glad I got it when I did.

I bought a disassembler kit somewhere (PennState maybe) and I agree with Bill that a punch set will work as well, but the kit I bought came with a sort of an anvil thing that has come in handy several times for other things... Besides, I already had a full punch set and the disassembly kit was an opportunity/excuse to buy another tool... :D
