Just learned a really painful lesson this weekend. Dad was given an oak board about9'ft long by 6" square. Put it up to "season" for about a year, tarp right on the green wood. cried when we had to pitch it today due to the fact that all the little creepy crawlers ate into it. Not only that one was gone but some black walnut also. did save a few of the crotch/burl peices though. Talked Dad into building a solar kiln.
lesson learned...
tarps do not go on top of green wood.
keep checking for little critters
and now the big question...how do you keep the bugs off of the wood. we have to store it outdoors.
thanks for the advice

I hope you saves anything with interesting holes! I have had some really interesting results working with spalted or worm burrowed wood. Stabilizing the wood with CA glue before turning too deep allows you to salvage this stuff sometimes.

Some people go ape over turnings with worm holes or worm tracks in them. They will sell two to one over plain solid wood.
Here is a 9.25" bowl I turned just this afternoon on my Mini lathe. It has extensive worm damage on one side so I photographed it with that side showing..
Don't throw wormy wood away when you have a lathe.

no these were some kinda beetles. no real way to turn around this. was infested with not only ants but the "burrows" are about half inch across. I think from now on we are going to just go ahead and resaw and store in the attic. Since we have alot of cedar we should not have any insect problems there..knock on wood!
