To answer your question is a bit hard because there are different analine dyes. If you want to compare the waterbased ones and rits yes they are about the same. No they are no more toxic but be warned you need to wear gloves or it will get into the skin and take awhile to wear off. As with any powder you do not want to be breathing in the actual powder. The results will be a finish that shows the wood grain through quite well and depends on the color used, the depth of color will be effected with each coat. You do not say what you are looking to do but I like to use the Trans tint dyes and get them here. http://www.homesteadfinishing.com/phpBB2/index.php?sid=6fee1ca9c85f7d5afb8df08e9347835c This site is a very good site also for any finishing questions. I get my waterbased lacquer from them also.
To name a few site where you can get analine dyes are as mentioned and also Woodcraft , and www.woodturnerscatalog.com

...are they toxic?...
Most are not food safe. The power dyes should be treated with respect, but are not what I would call TOXIC, as in landfill killers.
...do they have an odor?...
No.
The aniline dyes made with de-natured alcohol solvent does have the odor of alcohol.
...can you compare them to the Rit type dyes?....
Trans-Fast (aniline) dyes are better for UV protection and longer life than Ritz, which BTW is much better for washing machine cleaning of object being dyed.
Two problems:
1-Aniline dyes are absorbed by the end grain faster, and deeper than on the surface or edge grain. The ends of a flat board will be darker and have stronger, deeper dye color than the top and sides of a board (about 1/8 to 1/4 inch.) In scroll sawing and turning, this is becomes a problem because our cutting has end grain, edge grain, and surface grain everywhere.
2- Aniline dyes will stain your skin for several days. Also they will add color to your floor, bench, wash tub, sink, and every articles of clothing with in 25 feet. I swear, any and all pets are drawn like magnets to being stained by aniline dyes. Kids are optional. The one plastic glove with the pin hole in the middle finger is the one you will put on when you use the dye; giving your day job co-workers no end of fun the next day.
Aside: mixing aniline dyes is tricky. You only want to mix a small amount. Last time I think I had to measure 0.50 oz of dye. To do so you need a weight scale to measure very small amounts as in 0 - 2 oz in 0.01 increments (or 0.5 grams.) The weight scales you need are also used by illegal drug people.

John; My mission is to try and find products that are ,odor free, non toxic, possible quick drying, etc.During the warm weather I can go out to the shed with the smelly products. In the winter, can not do finishing in the house(except water based stains), because my wife is subseptable to all these odors...Now for some strange reason Womens hair care products, bother me,and they are really smelly...but it does not bother the wife! Go Figure...
That's my line here with that...and thanks for welcoming me back, life has had it's downs for us this year, trying to return to something more normal.

(PS our local HD's often have oops paint and stain in quarts, for $1.00. I have gotten quite a few this way...I always stop when in the store, you never know what you will find!)

Phil; Thanks for the info...looks like something good to stay away from! Don't want to go around looking like a mistake at a Tatoo Parlor!
