Although I'm fairly new to the forum , I can't understand why people will look at another crafters work and not rate it , weather it is positive or negative . I think that all people would like to know what other crafters think of their work . A positive reply gives them a pat on the back when , as all crafters know , their own work is never good enough for them . A negative reply just may point out something that they may have overlooked and I'm sure that they would appreciate those comments as well .
Please tell me what YOU think , weather it is positive or negative .
Thanks for listening .

I don't always rate a guy's work because I only rate some one when they ask for it or if something about it in some way involves me. Like when I write to someone about their work. If I am in a discussion with them, I usually like what they are doing and I tell them so. Never though about just rating all of the stuff I see but I do agree that it is something that I would like on my work. Not the rating so much as constructive thoughts others might have.

I never give a negative comment about anyone's work. If someone asked me what they could do to make it better or talk about finishes or turning bottoms, I'll discuss how I do it. Woodturners evolve by learning from others and trying things themselves. Nobody knows better than the woodworker that made and object the flaws it has. Woodturners are forever changing and hopefully getting better. I would never want to be the one to discourage anyone. When a turner is real proud of his work, he's not looking for criticism.

Another problem with trying to rate someone's work - there are so many different types of projects out there it is like comparing apples and oranges. A lot of personal preference goes into rating too, example: I'm not particularly impressed by fretwork clocks so I tend to not think as highly of them as other stuff, but to other guys - clocks are thier thing so they rate THEM higher. It's a complicated mess. But, on the other hand, a little constructive critique can be helpful.
