Hello all,
I thought I would take this time to ask for a head count on this site. There are 1400 members listed. I look in the archieves and not many of them make posts. That is not what I am after. This has nothing to do with you making a post regarding a question, answer, or comment. All I would like is if each and everyone that comes to this site to type your name and say "here". If you want to put in a little ditty about something feel free. I know this is a busy time of the season but feel most who are on the computer check in on occasion so lets here it. There will be no scrutinizing of the names or anything like that. Just would like to get a feel of who is looking in. Please Do Not Be Shy !!!
I will start because if anyone has checked in here know me by now. My name is John and go by the name JTTHECLOCKMAN and would like to take this time to say a big hello and a Thank You to all that participate!!!

Hi everyone.
Been busy with a large order of pens. I have also been busy building some solar air units. I had one yrs ago and with the prices going up, I thought it would be nice having some free heat after the consruction cost that are minimal.
If any one is interested in the simple idea,e-mail me and I will give you the instructions. If a lot of people want the instructions I might put on here in the off subject area,if that would be ok with the powers to be.

Hi Fred;
That seems to be a fairly normal thing on all sites regardless of what type of site it is. There are always a small percentage of regular participants compared to the number of lurkers.
Probably due to lack of time because so many like to scan through lots of sites and just pick up on topics of most interest.
Then I find a lot that are too shy to participate and just register into a site to read and learn all the pro's and cons of certain topics. But being too shy to participate doesn't apply to you and me :D

Yes I agree. Why some people just choose not to say HI is beyond me. There is no ridiculing or making fun of on this site and we are all very friendly so a simple HI and I am still here looking in. Maybe you or Phil can explain when a person dosn't sign in he can still view the boards and guess this counts. I know I never sign out of my sites that I visit on a daily basis. The cookies take me right back to the site and is very easy. I guess some like to be in stealth mode and just come to the site to check things out and if there is something interesting they will sign in. I have on occasion checked the members list and see all the names that have signed up but not once posted any thing. I do know some people are shy and just want to watch but if you are wanting answers to any particular question it could take a long time for someone else to ask it. Well to each his own I have tried everything I could to get people to partcipate but to no avail. I originally posted that question just to see how many people do actually tune in here.
If you haven't yet signed are welcome card please do and would be glad to hear from you all. Thanks to the ones that have done so already and continue to participate. :) :) :)

John .
I don't think it has anything to do with this site or any other site. Apart from woodworking I also participate in Automobile forums for my particular make and model and gardening forums etc , etc. but every forum you ever go to on the internet will always have a handfull of of regulars and the rest are lurkers that come out of the woodworking (pun intended) occasionaly to contribute. And like you said , some never do and probably never will. Many of us don't have time to participate in all of the ones we have bookmarked so we just come in and scan through to see what's new and participate in ones of most interest at the time. .
I am like you wheras I never sign out of sites. I rely on cookies to get me instantly to where I want to go.

Just my 2 cents.
I to am on a number of forums, and am in gardening mode at this time. I garden organic so I start all of my stuff. I have about 300 cups in one state of growing at any one time this year, that and 1/2 acre to cut with a push mower keeps this older man on his toes. Wood is my first interest though and we are having a pen swop on another forum at this time
JUst my 2 cents
I'm also on other forums in woodworking carving and the like. Plus working in the construction game, when you get home you just sit back in front of the tube till it's night-night time. I should be able to contibute more for a while as of three weeks ago I'm on the "E" line . It's really nice to wake up at a desent hour, no 4 or 4:30. I treat this like a vacation. I'll probably change if the unemployment drags on n on n on. WHO CARES . So just to say I'm no longer a lurker :D

Hi JT: Glenn again. Just posted a reply on "scrollsawing site." Basically said I'm in agreement with u. Glenn :D

Welcome aboard Glenn,
I am glad you decided to come on over. This little place on the internet is a great place to hang out and talk about all aspects of woodworking as you will see. We have members that do flat work, scroll work and turning and carving so we are well diversified. Take a look around and when you get a chance check out the galleries and you will be amazed as to the talent here. We have the best gallery on the net bar none. Any questions or comments feel free to jump in for we are a friendly bunch.
As for your comment about trying new aspects of woodworking that is what keeps the excitement going. I have done my share of tables, cabinets, and other flat work. I have done my share of scrolling and continue but not as great as I once did because I am turning more. My big problem is finding shop time. So as I said welcome and feel free to make friends. :)

I live in the Uk, and we have recently bought a second home in France, so thats taking the time at the minute. The good news is that the house in france has a full size cellar under the house, which is ideal for me to play with bits of wood, out of the way of the real boss.

I'm Still here and checking in now and then.... I'm still trying to be the "JT" of North Dakota.... making clocks and special orders.
I have a 13 year old son of a friend who is learning the art of scroll sawing.... he's getting pretty good for a youngster just starting out
we had a downer of a holiday season as my Mom passed away a couple of days before Christmas..... Pat, my wife and I, have been acting as caregivers for the past three years .... checking in on her once or twice a day so she could stay in her home..... She had a bad fall just before Thanksgiving Day and had a stroke just before Christmas..... Brothers and sister had to come in from all over the country and middle east so the funeral was delayed a bit...
Things are back to normal with a house full of stuff to dispose of
But, going into the basement and working on projects helped keep things in perspective.... I have 6 wall shelf and 11 new clocks in various stages of production.... I'll have to start sanding, staining and assembling soon

My deepest heartfelt condolences go out to you and your family for your loss. Things will never be normal for a long time. Your efforts to help your Mom stay independent and to enjoy her life meant so much to her and it speaks volumes as to the charachter you and your wife have. I am sure it was done out of love and you will be rewarded hundredfold. As you go on in life and have those flash backs just keep remembering the good times shared. Mom's are special. Good luck to you and your family.
I admire your fortitude to go to the shop to clear the mind. I know I could not bring myself to doing that for quite awhile when my Dad passed away this June. I hope to see a few new things coming out of your shop and again sorry for your loss.

This was one of the main reasons I did it back then because you and I have talked about this. I was curious just to see who actually checks in and I did not care if they posted or not. I think the ratio is pretty bismal ( I think that is the word) Everyday more and more new members are joining and this I love. It shows the word of our site is getting out there. Now some of our new members have indeed joined in and I encourage more to do the same. This is a great place to visit and love to stop by here but it can even be better. I would like to see conversations open up about different methods tried or different materials or different finishes. I like to see photos posted about latest works. Not only in the albumns but in the topics area. I would love to see more turners come out. Bill Young is about the only one that posts pictures of his latest turnings. I know there are other turners here. I picked turners because I am just getting my feet wet in this area. I love scrolling more than any type of woodworking so I will and many others would love to get scrolling topics going. It does not have to be questions about what saws or what blades it can be about anything. I tried to get a group project going but no one bit on it so I did not follow it up. I am looking for suggestions and help to make this a better site than it is.
I did not want this to become another one of my long winded speaches about participation because the ones that are here do jump in. It was about trying to see other people come aboard. We love passing on information whenever we can and for me I get great satisfaction out of it. I have been called a few names and told a few things that can't be repeated but this does not and will not deter me from trying to help when I can. If someone does not agree with me that is fine but offer some alternatives so we can talk about them.
So members you joined for some reason and no one wants that to be a great experience more than I. Now I am nothing more than a member just like you but have become the loudmouth here I guess I can say and is evident by the amount of posts. I say this over and over we have the best photo gallery on the net and continue to add to it. We are a friendly bunch and we all want the same thing to share. But the ratio between members and ones that join us is way off. I did not mean to push this topic in another direction but I did. Sorry.

Just got finished building the cradle for my godson and his wife Lisa...
I made it out of pine boards salvaged from the treehouse I built for him 25 years ago. I ordered plans the day I learned she was pregnant and started it when she was about 7 months along. Unfortunately, it turned out the plans they sent me were for a doll cradle...
I resized everything in my head but as I started drawing and cutting I decided I didn't like the general design. I wanted something from the 1700s-1800s, solid and stable that wouldn't flip on it's side if it rocked too hard. So... I drew up my own plans which put the wide (15") base on shallow rockers so it sat only a couple of inches up off the floor. I let the rockers extend 3 inches beyond the bed and added a treadle step on each side so Lisa can rock it with her foot while she relaxes.
After construction was finished I decided to stain it ... Minwax Gel Stain in Bombay Mahogany...
Hated it...Stripped it... resanded...tried plain Mahogany...
Looked new but splotchy and I wanted it to look old and even...
Took 5 coats before the splotch started to blend in...
Then I dabbed on some walnut, waited 2 minutes and rubbed it in for a patina effect. Finished up with three coats of poly...
Not pretty, but solid and hopefully it will be passed down for a few generations...
Pictures are at http://themeadow.us/cradle - if anyone is interested.

I might as well log in here officially too on this topic. One observation about this forum is that we do have absolutely the best photo gallery anywhere. The ability to click into close-ups of what interests you or scan over what doesn't is an outstanding benefit. Now that I have moved up from 28.8 dial-up I do have photos of work scattered elsewhere, but my gallery section here is my official homepage whenever I need to designate one. Thanks Steebar and all participants for making this forum worth our time.

Steve:
Quick question about where you live--
Is it pronounced Qua-LIC-um (Qua-LIS-um
or Qua-li-CUM ?? (Qua-li-KUM)

The pronunciation accents the first syllable, QUA li cum. I belive it is a First Nation word for meeting place.
The c is a hard c, li with short i, KWA-li-kum.
Hope this helps.

Yes, It does help. Thanks.
I just get curious sometimes how woodworkers pronounce their community. I sometimes just cannot guess if a community name is First Nation, French, or Spanish. And then you add a local accent.... I live in Southeastern Michigan and most Canadians are shocked how simple French names get so mangled by the locals around Detroit. (BTW, Detroit is also a French word, but French pronounce the word for river strait, or narrowing of river width, quite a bit differently.)

I have not visited this site in awhile. I have not done any wood working since last December(shame on me), but Iam ready to get started again.

Found my way back, John
The fall shows really get me tied up and not much computer time. Only two more to go and then I can "rest". :)

Hello all,
I thought I would take this time to ask for a head count on this site.
