Came across an interesting read - author writes about collecting his favorite artists works - E J Hughes - a British Columbia landscape artist. The last chapter deals with the author's quest to find framers that will work with the painting rather than use the standard available. It appears when purchased most of the paintings had the ubiquitous gilt - artist doesn't frame his own work. The difference between the work before and after is marked. I'll include a link with more - but nice to see wood working being considered part of the artwork (as it should be IMHO)

On a different framing note...
If any one is interested in frames made from old barnboard.... I have a friend in the area who does that, at a rather reasonable price....
I have used these on wildlife scenes and rural prairie scenes and they are quite effective.... The depth of the inset for the pictures is not quite deep enough to use glass with the 1/8 inch wood pictures and the backing....
He has leads on many old barns in North Dakota.
