I recently bought a porter cable router bit from Home Depot. It is a 1/4 inch shaft straight carbide bit. I put in a black and decker router mounted in a router table. The bit wlli work loose in the collet. None of my other bits do this and I have several different brands. I took the bit and roughed up the shaft with some sandpaper , but this did not help. Has anyone ever had this problem?

I can say I have never used Porta Cable router bits. This is a new line Home Depot just started selling. I would return the bit for sure. The shaft could be tapered and that is not a good thing. That is why you do not bottom a bit out in a router because where the shaft meets the cutter it tapers. Always raise the bit about 3/16 to 1/4" You may have to do this even higher with those bits. If you have a different PC bit try it and install the same way as you did this one and run some test cuts. This will tell you if it is time to get a new collet or if it is just that bit. I am sure we will be hearing more about these bits as more people start using them. In the mean time always wear eye protection and be consious of that happening.

Could be 6mm or 1/4" shank
