Do you think that it is possable to use a speed controller to slow down my Jet mini lathe? I have the standard (non variable speed) model. Even at the slowest speed, I think it runs to fast for some larger bowl turnings, especially for sanding.

If you download the users manuals fron the jet site make sure they both the standard and variable speed use the same motor, If they do thn you have a safe bet that f you order heir speed controller it would work. You might have to play and find the right pulley combo to work with it to get the slower speeds without losing the faster too much.

The short answer to your question is NO. I wasn't sure what motor was on the non VS lathe because the one I have is a VS and has a universal motor. So I asked this question on another site and here is the answer.

A router motor is a universal motor (DC motor that can also run on AC) and the type of controller that you are showing will only run on universal motors (DC motors). Things that use universal motors are drills, routers, Dremel tools, detail sanders, random orbital sanders, hand held belt sanders, circle saws, biscuit cutters, variable speed mini lathes, shop vacs, and anything else that has brushes and makes a lot of noise. Most of those things can be used with the type of speed controllers that you show unless they have soft start or already have a built-in speed controller.

Fixed speed mini lathes (this would be the six-speed Jet) do not have universal motors. They are AC induction motors. That type of controller will not work with AC induction motors.

My question is why does it not go as slow as you want?? Do you have the right pulley combination?? I have never heard of anyone saying it does not go slow enough ussually it does not go fast enough or have enough torque. Hope this helps and hope you did not try it. For it will smoke it.
